A certificate is a claim. Anyone can type “Six Sigma Green Belt” onto a résumé, and a convincing-looking PDF takes about ten minutes to produce. What separates a credential from a claim is a single question: can a stranger confirm it without taking anybody’s word? Running that check takes less than a minute when the issuer has done its job — and tells you almost everything you need to know when it hasn’t.

What a credential ID actually is
A credential ID is the serial number of one specific award: this person, this program, this date. The issuer generates it at the moment of certification and stores it in a register the issuer controls, which turns the ID into a key — enter it on the issuer’s verification page and the matching record comes back, or it doesn’t. That lookup is the entire proof. A string of letters and digits printed on a certificate demonstrates nothing by itself, because a forger can print a plausible ID just as easily as a real issuer can. So the first question to ask about any certificate is not “does it have an ID?” but “where do I type it in?”
What a public register shows — and what it should not
A public register — some issuers call it a verification page or a credential directory — is the issuer’s standing answer to that question. Enter an ID, and a legitimate register returns a small, specific set of facts: the holder’s name exactly as certified, the program or belt level, the issue date, the expiry date if there is one, and the credential’s current status — valid, expired or revoked.
Just as telling is what a register should not do. It should not expose more than the certificate itself states — no email addresses, no exam scores. Verification confirms a fact; it does not publish a file. And it should not ask the person checking to create an account, pay a fee or talk to a salesperson. Friction for the checker is failure by design: most people who meet it will simply not check, and an unchecked credential is worth exactly what an unverified claim is worth.
How to verify any certificate in under a minute
- 01Find the credential ID on the certificate. It is usually printed near the holder’s name or in a corner, often beneath a QR code.
- 02Go to the issuer’s verification page. It should be linked from the certificate itself or reachable from the issuer’s homepage in one click. If the certificate carries a QR code, scanning it should land you on the record directly.
- 03Enter the ID and compare the record against the document — name, program, issue date. Every field should match exactly; a near miss is a miss.
- 04Read the status, not just the result. A record can exist and still say expired or revoked. Confirm what the register actually reports, not merely that it loaded.
- 05If anything fails — no page, no record, mismatched details — contact the issuer through the contact details on its own website, not an address printed on the certificate. A forged certificate can list any email its author likes.
Red flags that should end the check
- No verification page at all. If the issuer’s site offers no way to look up a credential, the certificate is unverifiable by design — treat it as a statement of attendance at best.
- A badge you must pay to keep. When a credential vanishes from the register because a renewal fee lapsed, verification is measuring the holder’s subscription, not their competence. Recertification built on reassessment is defensible; expiry tied purely to a payment is a red flag.
- An issuer that cannot be contacted. No named organization, no working contact channel, no response to enquiries — if you cannot reach the issuer, you cannot trust its register, because nobody stands behind it.
- Verification by email only. “Write to us and we’ll confirm” is better than nothing, but it is slow, hard to scale and frequently unanswered. A serious register is public and self-service.
- A record thinner than the certificate. If the register confirms only that an ID exists — without the holder’s name or the program — it confirms nothing that matters. Matching the person to the award is the entire point.
- No published standard. An issuer should state publicly what each certification covers and what passing requires. If no such document exists anywhere, the credential has no fixed meaning to verify.
