What Is DMADV? Definition and Uses

DMADV — Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify — is the Six Sigma roadmap for creating something new: a process, product, or service that does not exist yet, or one so broken that improvement really means replacement. It is the core method of Design for Six Sigma, and it applies the same discipline to design that DMAIC applies to repair: requirements first, evidence before commitment.

How it works

Define sets the goal of the design effort and its scope. Measure captures what customers need and translates those needs into measurable requirements — the critical-to-quality characteristics the design must hit. Analyze develops and compares high-level design concepts against those requirements. Design turns the winning concept into a detailed, buildable specification. Verify proves the design performs under real conditions, usually through pilots or trial runs, before full launch.

The choice between DMAIC and DMADV is made early. If a process exists and can plausibly be tuned to meet requirements, DMAIC is cheaper and faster. If requirements have moved beyond what the current design can ever deliver — or nothing exists at all — DMADV prevents the expensive habit of endlessly improving a thing that should be replaced.

In practice the two roadmaps share a culture — chartered projects, measurable requirements, tollgate reviews — so teams fluent in DMAIC find the first three letters of DMADV familiar. The break comes at the fourth: instead of improving what the data indicted, the team designs what the requirements demand, and Verify replaces Control as the phase that earns the right to launch.

A worked mini-example

Imagine an illustrative regional insurer launching its first online claims-intake channel. There is no existing digital process to improve, so DMAIC does not apply. Define scopes the channel and its launch criteria. Measure gathers what claimants need — clear status visibility, minimal document re-submission — and converts each need into a measurable requirement. Analyze compares three candidate intake designs against those requirements on paper. Design specifies the chosen flow in detail, down to the data captured at each step. Verify runs a limited pilot with real claims before the public launch, and the pilot’s results, not the project deadline, decide readiness.
